Jurgen Klopp backing Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson to win major award

Jurgen Klopp believes Jordan Henderson would be a worthy winner of the BBC's prestigious Sports Personality of the Year Award.

Henderson is one of six people shortlisted for the gong having skippered Liverpool to a first title in 30 years, while also being named Footballer of the Year and helping set up a Premier League coronavirus fund for NHS workers.

The 30-year-old is up against seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, female jockey Hollie Doyle, six-time world snooker champion Ronnie O'Sullivan and England cricketer Stuart Broad.

Michael Owen claimed the honour while a Liverpool player in 1998, one of only five footballers to triumph since the award was first handed out in 1954.

And Klopp has indicated he will be making sure he votes for Henderson before the winner is announced on Sunday evening.

“Am I allowed more than one vote? Then he has a chance… he would have my vote," said the Reds boss.

“He is an exceptional person, an exceptional player. He did a great job in the summer for not just our players but players in general.

“For the England national team, he is involved in pretty much everything. He is a great guy and would be a worthy award winner.

“I don’t know exactly who the other people are involved, but he’d be a worthy one."

Henderson is expected to captain Liverpool in Saturday's early Premier League kick-off at Crystal Palace.

He is likely to be joined in midfield by Curtis Jones, who has impressed in the Reds' last two games against Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.

And Klopp had reiterated the youngster's form makes it easy to forget he is still a teenager.

“Some people will say that Liverpool lets you grow up quickly – and I don’t mean the club, I mean the city!" said the Liverpool manager.

“He is 19 until he enters the pitch. That’s the thing they all have to be. When you say he’s 19 and he’s allowed to make this mistake and this mistake and this mistake – every player can make mistakes. It’s not a problem. We have to sort that as a team.

“When we speak about the kids, we forget Curtis constantly because we don’t see him as a kid any more. But he is.

“We just want him to keep working hard and be who he is. The future could be pretty bright."
