Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool receive classy message from Pepe Reina

Pepe Reina has sent a classy message to Liverpool after returning for the first time since leaving the club seven years ago.

The Spaniard was a popular figure at Anfield in the nine years he was a Liverpool player.

He would leave the club in 2014 for Napoli, enjoying two spells with the Italian outfit as well as moves to Bayern Munich and AC Milan.

Reina returned to the Premier League last summer on loan with Aston Villa and relished the chance to turn out against his former side - even  if it was in an empty Anfield.

And the 37-year-old paid tribute to the newly crowned Premier League champions.

Speaking after Villa were beaten 2-0 by Jurgen Klopp's side, Reina said: "I was expecting this for a long time.

"Seven years since I left and I never had the chance to come back, and now I just realised in April I was looking forward to coming back.

"But it is always nice to be here even without the supporters to enjoy this wonderful stadium."

Speaking to the BBC, he added: "For generations we've been fighting for this title and we couldn't make it when I was here.

"But they fully deserve it and for the last three or four seasons they have been fantastic.

"And I am very happy for the Liverpool supporters."
