Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool facing anxious wait over key man ahead of Tottenham clash

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is hopeful that defender Joel Matip will be fit to face Tottenham at Anfield tomorrow.

The central defender went off injured at half time in the Reds' 1-1 draw with Fulham on Sunday, with Liverpool's defensive problems worsening as a result.

Liverpool are already without Virgil van Dijk after he sustained a serious knee ligament injury in the Merseyside derby with Everton in October, while Joe Gomez is also sidelined with a knee injury.

Reds captain Jordan Henderson dropped into defence as a result of Matip's injury on Sunday at Craven Cottage, although Klopp has not ruled out a return for the Cameroon international against Spurs at Anfield.

“Joel has a spasm in his back. We will see," Klopp said, speaking after the game on Sunday.

"He will get treatment and we will see. I think there will be a chance for Wednesday. It’s not that bad at the moment.”

If Matip is not fit, Klopp may turn once again to one of the younger players in his squad to play alongside central midfielder Fabinho in the centre of defence.

Centre-back Nathaniel Phillips has impressed when he has played for Liverpool recently, while 19-year-old right-back Neco Williams has made four Premier League appearances for the Reds so far this season.

Klopp is, however, set to be without a number of first team stars for the visit of Tottenham, with Diogo Jota, Xherdan Shaqiri, James Milner, Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita also currently sidelined.

The Liverpool boss is set to provide updates on the latest injury news within his squad later today at his pre-match press conference ahead of the game.
