Jurgen Klopp agrees with Owen Hargreaves about Kai Havertz as Chelsea push to seal £75m transfer

Jurgen Klopp has described Kai Havertz as a "great" player, amid reports that Chelsea are pushing to sign the Bayer Leverkusen forward.

According to The Mail, Chelsea have opened talks with Leverkusen over a deal for the highly-rated youngster.

Havertz, who has scored five goals in four games since the Bundesliga restarted last month, is valued at around £90million, but Chelsea are reportedly trying to negotiate a deal nearer the £70million mark.

Frank Lampard's side are thought to be close to securing the signature of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, having already signed Hakim Ziyech from Ajax.

Another big money in the shape of Havertz would represent something of a coup given the interest from Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the German.

Liverpool have also been linked with Havertz, with Reds boss Klopp confirming his admiration for the forward - but admitted that the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic would complicate any move.

"There are a lot of good players on this planet," Klopp told Sky Germany. "Timo Werner is a great player, Kai Havertz is a great player.

"Right time, opportunity - everything has to come together. Six, seven weeks ago, we didn't know if we could play again this year. If we hadn't played the second half of the season, we would have thought, 'OK, when can you really play football again?' And now it starts right away.

"We act as if everything is already settled. It's not settled. We use this little loophole we've been left to play football again. Everything else we have to see the moment it happens. We can't pretend now that everything's going to be fine in the future."

Former Manchester United and Bayern midfielder Owen Hargreaves was in agreement with Klopp's assessment of Havertz, describing the 20-year-old as a "special" talent.

“He is special. He is the next one," Hargreaves told  Goal.

"I think all the best German players stay in the Bundesliga for a while and then they go to the Premier League or Barcelona or Real Madrid.

“All eyes are on (Erling) Haaland and (Jadon) Sancho but Kai Havertz is the one from a German perspective.

“He is special and he is like a hybrid of Michael Ballack and Mesut Ozil. That says a lot in terms of his goals and elegance.”

When asked about which team Havertz was likely to join, Hargreaves said: “It has to be a club which will play him all the time.

"I think he will have so many options. I think he is the type of player that could fit into any team.”
