Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool transfer uncertainty and explains window 'dreamland'

Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool will not change their transfer philosophy with the club "not living in dreamland" over recruitment amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Premier League and world champions have made just one purchase so far this summer when signing left-back Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiakos for £11.7million.

It is in contrast to a number of their title rivals, with Chelsea splashing out more than £130m and Manchester City already having spent almost £70m, albeit with both clubs having raised money by moving on players.

Liverpool sold Dejan Lovren for almost £11m and have seen Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Andy Lonergan and Pedro Chirivella depart on free transfers.

And while unsure over any future signings, Klopp believes it would be irresponsible for the Reds to change their transfer approach with the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic ongoing.

"I don't know what will happen to be honest, but there is a long time go until October 6 (the day after the window closes)," said the Reds boss.

"We have brought in Kostas already. The kids are coming closer and closer, they have looked really well in pre-season.

"It will be interesting to see what other teams are doing but we are more or less in our situation, and will deal with our situation like we always have done.

"The philosophy of this club is pretty clear. We will see how much we can and want to spend, and all these kind of things."

Klopp added: "Time is still uncertain for all of us, not just in football. The situation is not sorted, so we can't deal with it as though it is sorted."

"We're not living in dreamland where we go 'let's bring him in, bring him in and bring him in' and later on realise we have some other problems. We deal with our situation which is a good one, but we've been dealing with it for a while and think we should do it for a bit longer.

"It's still uncertain out there and we should not forget that."

Liverpool will be without a host of senior players through injury when they begin their campaign with the Community Shield against Arsenal at Wembley on Saturday.

And while content with the size of his squad, Klopp is preparing for an "intense" season given the relentless nature of the fixture list.

"Numbers in the squad make sense," he said. "The size of the squad is absolutely okay at the moment - we have a lot of injured players but can still take a big squad to London on Saturday.

"You can talk about quality, and I'm happy with what we have. We look constantly for improvements, and we look internally how we can improve the players.

"Is having the biggest squad ever the solution for next season? I don't know. We will see. But it will be intense.

"Nobody is moaning at the moment - we're just happy we're playing at all. That's how we have to approach the whole season."
