Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool have achieved what he never thought possible

Jurgen Klopp admits he “felt nothing” on being told Liverpool had created European football history – and immediately set his sights on Manchester United.

A 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening means the Reds have taken 61 points from a possible 63 this season.

It's the highest total ever achieved at that stage of a campaign in any of Europe's leading leagues, and moved the European and world champions 16 points clear at the Premier League summit.

But of the Continental landmark, Klopp said: “I really try to respond in an appropriate way, but when somebody told me I didn't feel anything.

“I have been in football 50 years or so, and if somebody would have told me it would ever happen, I'd have probably said it's not possible.

“Now it's happened, I don't feel. I don't know exactly what's wrong with me!

“But it's really cool, it's exceptional. We analysed after the game and told the boys what we could and should have done better, but of course I know if it was easy to have so many wins then other teams would have done it.

“It's very exceptional. But we didn't think a second about it before the game, I didn't and afterwards someone had to remind me about it.”

Klopp instead chose to focus on the remainder of Liverpool's campaign, which continues with the visit of bitter rivals Manchester United on Sunday week.

“If it stays like this, I can think about it in the next five years,” he said.

“Now, what we are trying to do is create a basis for the rest of the season. The rest of the season is long, there are still a lot of tough games to play.

“The next one is especially tough and we have to be ready for that.”
