Jurgen Klopp admits expectations cost Brendan Rodgers his job at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp believes it was “relationships and expectations” that cost Brendan Rodgers the Liverpool job, not his quality as a coach.

The current Reds manager welcomes his predecessor back to Anfield at the weekend, and was quick to point out the moment Rodgers he took over, he knew immediately Rodgers wasn’t the problem.

“Only in public when a manager gets the sack that people think he lost his football brain or something. That is not how it happened,” he explained.

I knew when I came that he was not the reason that things didn’t work out. Whatever it was, I don't know, but it was not his quality as a coach. It is not as easy as that.

“Expectations, relationships, whatever, if that doesn't work anymore, the club has to make a decision. That will happen one day and the club will make a decision.”

Klopp joked about having no problems with Rodgers “since all the issues when we moved into his house are sorted.”

He also joked that the former Reds boss didn’t even have to take the Leicester job because…”We pay our rent for him, so I’m not sure he has to work but he still does! You’re welcome!”

The pair have a good relationship, and the German coach explained that is because they had tea and a chat when he rented the previous manager’s house in Liverpool, and took a look around.

“We sat in the living room talking to each other about the pride and expectations and stuff and a little bit about the team as well, but that is normal,” Klopp said.

“He was not at all frustrated or anything, he took it like a man to be honest. I knew the team, it was a normal conversation.”

Klopp will be hoping his side continue their perfect start to the Premier League season as the Reds look to make it eight wins out of eight and go eight points clear at the top of the table ahead of Manchester City's clash with Wolves on Sunday.
