Jurgen Klopp addresses Lionel Messi Liverpool transfer and makes Man City admission

Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool have no chance of luring Lionel Messi to Anfield.

Messi, widely regarded as the best footballer in the world, has prompted a transfer scramble after informing Barcelona he wants to leave the club during the current transfer window.

Champions League runners-up Paris Saint-Germain, Europa League runners-up Inter Milan and League Cup winners Manchester City are considered the three favourites to snap up the 33-year-old should his departure be made possible.

And when asked about any interest in Messi, Klopp confirmed finances make any move for the Argentina international a complete non-starter.

"Interest? Who doesn't want to have Messi in his team?!?" said the Reds boss.

"But no chance. The numbers are absolutely not for us. We don't even have to start thinking about it. It is all clear - no chance. But a good player, to be honest!"

City have been most strongly linked given the vast backing of their owners and the fact Messi played under Pep Guardiola at Barcelona.

And Klopp admitted: "It would obviously help Manchester City and make it even more difficult to beat them, and it was already difficult. For the Premier League it would be great 100%, having the best player in the world in the league.

"I'm not sure the Premier League needs a boost but it would be one.

"It would be interesting to see Messi in the Premier League. Messi has never played in another league except Spain.

"Football here is completely different. I would like to see it but I'm not sure if I will."

Messi's last visit to Anfield in May 2019 saw him part of a Barcelona side that surrendered a 3-0 first-leg lead in their Champions League semi-final by losing 4-0.
