Three years ago, when he released his international debut album Hotel Univers, it seemed that Jupiter Bokondji would be the new hero of the African music scene. Here, after all, was a Kinshasa veteran with a real sense of danger in his singing, who had proved equally exhilarating playing live. Now, at last, comes the follow-up, and though it’s a six-track mini-album, it’s been worth the wait. Named, somewhat cheekily, after the so-far disastrous Congolese space programme (the last attempt, Troposphere 5, led to the presumed death of the rat on board), it’s a triumphant reminder of his urgent style. He is backed by driving guitar band, Okwess International, who have worked with him for more than 20 years, with Damon Albarn adding keyboards and Warren Ellis, of Nick Cave fame, matching mournful violin against Jupiter’s tense, dramatic vocals on the opening track. A brief but exhilarating set.
