Jupiter and Saturn conjunction creates Christmas 'star' - here's when you'll see it tonight

Stargazers in Glasgow could be treated to an incredible sight tonight; a 'Christmas star' phenomenon that hasn't appeared in almost 800 years.

The celestial event is actually a conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, which appear to the naked eye as a 'double planet'.

And tonight will see both planets (the largest in the solar system) reach their closest point.

Such an occurrence hasn't happened since December 1623, although the event was obscured by its proximity to the Sun at that time.

Prior to that, the last visible 'Great Conjunction' was way back in 1226.

What time will the 'Christmas star' be visible?

The 'Christmas Star' is set to be visible to stargazers in the UK just after sunset this afternoon, so people in Glasgow should look for the phenomenon from 3:53pm onwards.

The 'star' will be appear very low on the horizon and hover next to the ,moon.

To see it people will need to look to the south west, low on the horizon after dark but before 6.30pm when Jupiter and Saturn set below the horizon.

And although it should appear to the naked eye, those using binoculars or a telescope will of course be able to see the star more clearly.

How visible is it likely to be in Glasgow?

The Met Office weather forecast for the city notes that it will be cloudy in the afternoon with outbreaks of rain, although it should be a mainly dry night with some clear spells.

That being the case there could be a slight chance that we could catch sight of the Christmas star if the clouds clear up sufficiently prior to it disappearing at 6:30pm.
