Despite being a powerhouse in world hockey and considering the high standards they always set for themselves, Germany have been in somewhat of a slump over the past few years.
They last won a World Cup medal in 2010 when they finished second in New Delhi. As for the Olympics they last won gold in London and followed it up with a bronze in Rio. As for the FIH Pro-League, they finished third in the last edition.
But things might be in for a change especially now that their junior team have entered the final of the World Cup where they will take on Argentina at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.
The team coached by Valentin Altenburg have so far been unbeaten in the tournament and will go into the match on Sunday as the clear favourites.
In the group stage they easily beat Argentina, Pakistan and Egypt. It was only in the quarterfinals against Spain that they looked to be in trouble but they came back and earned a brilliant win via the shootouts. Argentina, meanwhile, have somewhat struggled en route the final except in their group game against Egypt. Although they lost only one match - in the group stage against Germany - they were taken the distance by Pakistan.
