Junior football matches cancelled after 'mindless individuals' destroy pitch

A football club boss has hit out at "mindless individuals" who destroyed a pitch by racing vehicles over the grass.

Matches have now been cancelled after Southwell City FC's junior pitches in Church Street were ruined on Thursday night, October 17.

Arrangements are being made with parents and carers, but support has been offered by Farnsfield Villa FC, which has offered the temporary use of their pitch.

A statement from the club's chairman, John Cunningham, said: "Some mindless individuals decided to race cars over our junior pitches on Church Street.

"They have caused serious damage and the 7-a-side pitches will be out of action for some time. Southwell Town Council are aware and are talking to the police.

"The club is now looking at alternative arrangements so that the 7v7 matches can continue to be played with the minimum of disruption.

"Team managers will be in touch with parents/carers to discuss arrangement for specific matches that were due to be played this weekend."

People took to Twitter to share their anger at the situation.

Newark's Farnsfield Villa FC tweeted their show of support for the club, saying: "That’s terrible. If we can help in anyway by teams using our pitch temporarily then please get in touch."

The club is now appealing for witnesses to get in touch.

A tweet from Southwell City FC added: "The worst thing about this is not the actual repair work, it’s the fact that loads of kids who love football will be unable to play here for a while until it’s all sorted."
