Juninho Paulista holds Gabriel Martinelli talks over Arsenal star's international future

Brazil national team coordinator Juninho Paulista reportedly visited the Arsenal training ground on Wednesday to hold talks with Gabriel Martinelli over his international future.

The 18-year-old has had an outstanding start to his Gunner career since joining from Ituano last summer, scoring 12 goals in all competitions despite the fact he was expected to be one for the future when he was signed.

He has become so important to Arsenal that the club prevented him from playing in a pre-Olympic tournament for Brazil last month because they didn't want to lose him for important fixtures.

According to Brazilian newspaper O Globo, former Middlesbrough player Juninho made the trip to north London to speak to Martinelli, and he was met by Arsenal's technical director Edu Gaspar, who showed him around the training ground.

Martinelli is also eligible to play for Italy through his father, and Brazil are thought to be desperate to give him a senior cap and for him to commit his future to the nation.

He could be selected for the Olympics in Tokyo later this year, and he now has a decision to make on which country he wants to represent.

Speaking earlier this year for DAZN Brazil, Martinelli said: "I am Brazilian and my dream, of course, is to play for Brazil.

"But I could also play for Italy and nothing has been decided. I haven’t received a call from Brazil yet."

Martinell has represented Brazil U23s twice, but until he makes a competitive appearance for the senior squad he is still eligible to play for Italy.

The young forward is likely to return to action when Arsenal host Newcastle on Sunday looking to end a run of four straight games without a win in the Premier League, with Martinelli now a regular name in Mikel Arteta's starting line-up.
