June 21 restrictions to be 'partially lifted in mix and match plan'

The chances of all restrictions being lifted on June 21 as planned looks unlikely to go ahead, with the government planning a "mix and match" approach instead, according to reports.

Under stage four of the roadmap all remaining coronavirus restrictions were set to be relaxed, but following a rise in cases and fears around the Delta variant this is in doubt.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is now believed to be considering partially lifting restrictions in a "mix and match" fashion.

Mr Johnson will hold a press conference on Monday when he will reveal what will be allowed to happen on June 21.

On Wednesday Mr Johnson implied that the date for lifting restrictions could be delayed.

And now a senior government official told the Financial Times that fears about the new variant meant a “mix-and-match approach is probably on the cards".

The minister said it would be "easy" to allow larger weddings if regulations were tweaked, but nightclubs weren't likely to reopen "for a while".

Another government official said a hybrid plan to end restrictions was being considered, but that it would be "very complicated" to implement.

The official said: “What would you choose? Deciding the public health benefits would be difficult."

Yesterday Boris Johnson spoke about rising cases and when he was asked about plans for June 21 he didn't commit to the unlocking.

He said: "I think what everybody can see very clearly is that cases are going up, and in some cases hospitalisations are going up.

"We need to assess is the extent to which the vaccine rollout has built up protection in the population in order for us to go ahead to the next stage.

"What we need to assess is the extent to which the vaccine rollout, which has been phenomenal, has built up protection in the population in order for us to go ahead to the next stage. And so that's what we'll be looking at."
