June 21 delay likely as minister warns we can't 'squander' gains

A delay to lifting restrictions looks likely as a senior minister warned that the UK can't "squander" the progress that has already been made in the fight against the coronavirus crisis.

Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi appeared on GMB and said that the government would look at all the data over the weekend and that Boris Johnson would make the final decision and would speak to the nation on Monday.

Kate Garraway asked Mr Zahawi about the possibility of a four week delay in lifting restrictions.

He said: "When we set out the roadmap there was a reason for five week interval, we want to observe what the virus does, the battles we've had to win and people have had to win and sacrifice against this virus have been hard fought and hard won, let's not squander them now, that would be my very strong message."

Mr Zahawi continued: "The virus can only mutate if it has a population to infect, last week we saw a 63% rise in cases. But the vaccine is severing the link between cases and hospitalisations.

"The data on Monday will show why we are making the decisions we're making, it's important to keep an eye on hospitalisations and deaths."

Ben Shephard said: "It sounds like you're preparing us for a delay Mr Zahawi."

Mr Zahawi replied: "What I'm saying to you is let's not squander the hard won gains we've fought, gains we've made against this virus.

"We continue to learn about it, this Delta variant is more infectious and Public Health England experts say it's more severe, especially in those who haven't been vaccinated.

"We've got to make sure we vaccinate at scale and surge test and isolate and of course genome sequence as well."

*GMB continues at 6am on ITV on Monday
