Jumbo jets packed with PlayStation 5s land in UK as Sony desperate to keep up with Christmas demand

Sony are desperate to keep up with PlayStation 5 demand ahead of Christmas.

The gaming giant is eager to ensure fans are kept happy for the festive season - so much so they've loaded jumbo jets with the consoles and sent them off to the UK.

Three jumbo jets landed at Heathrow Airport in London yesterday (November 1) believed to be packed with Sony's latest consoles.

The firm launched the extraordinary 'Santa Special' air-lift on Monday to ensure gamers can actually get their hands on a PlayStation 5 console this year.

Sony's bid to please gamers came in the form of jets weighing 100 tonnes specially chartered to get the PS5s to the UK, according to The Sun.

Twelve articulated lorries were needed to ferry the PS5s from the airport’s cargo hub to distribution centres around the UK.

Monday's shipment were the third chartered jumbo delivery of PlayStation 5s to land in the UK - with two identical flights arriving on Monday and Thursday last week.

A Sony source said: “A phenomenal operation has been under way to stock UK shelves of PS5s for Christmas.

“Sony just wants to keep fans happy after a slew of issues with its new kit, and this is an unprecedented air-lift.

“The 747 plane is rare after being decommissioned by British Airways, but carries a vast amount of cargo as a freighter aircraft.

“Each plane can bring in 100 tonnes of equipment on almost 50 pallets. It means millions of gamers will now be smiling this Christmas.”

It's been nearly a year since the PlayStation 5 launched in the UK and demand is still as high as ever.

In the UK, the console was made available to buy on November 19, 2020 and sold out instantly.

The PlayStation 5 comes in two forms - the PS5 console: £449.99 and the PS5 Digital Edition console: £359.99.

The only difference between the PS5 console and the PS5 Digital Edition console is the inclusion of an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive in the PS5 console. The PS5 Digital Edition console does not feature a disc drive.

Stock and production issues have made it tough for fans to actually get their hands on either one, and due to demand, a number of retailers are limiting how many they can actually sell to customers, and equally production is being limited to suppliers too, to cope with the surge.

But this recent major shipment is hoping to solve this.

October has seen the likes of Argos, Amazon, Smyths, Scan, AO, Asda, Very, ShopTo and OnBuy release their PS5 restock drops, all of which have sold out within the first couple of hours of going on sale.

BT have also joined in, offering broadband customers a limited supply of both PlayStation 5 consoles.

Demand hasn't faltered and retailers are now beginning to get restocks of the PS5, offering exclusive deals and discounts.
