A plane heading to the US from Paris was forced to divert to Manchester Airport following an alert onboard.

Air Tahiti Nui flight THT7 was travelling to Los Angeles on Tuesday.

But an on board alert meant it had to divert into Manchester Airport.

Flight tracking website RadarBox reported it was likely caused by a medical emergency.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner left Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport just after noon.

But less than an hour after its departure, it squawked 7700,according to Aviation Source.

This means that local air traffic control facilities in the area were alerted that the aircraft had an emergency situation.

The plane then turned around and headed to Manchester.

After spending around nine hours on the tarmac at Manchester the plane flew back to Paris, according to Aviation source.

Replying to the account MT Aviation, one Twitter user, who said they were onboard the flight said: "Actually still in Manchester!

"We have a problem: to much kerosene to land in Paris , to many people to deplane in Manchester and the crew is at the end of its shift!!! We are stuck."

They later added: "What a trip! Yes after waiting 8 hours on the tarmac we were told the wings needed to be defrosted and that we would reach Paris in 3.5hours because we needed to burn as much combustible as possible. Arrived in Paris at 2:10am."

A spokesperson for Manchester Airport said it was understood the diversion was due to a medical emergency onboard and that there were no issues with the aircraft.

Air Tahiti Nui have been contacted for a comment.
