July's supermoon will be the biggest and brightest of the year

July's full moon is coming up this week and it's set to be the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year. This month's full moon is known as the Buck Moon.

It will rise on Wednesday, July 13, and is set to be at its brightest at 7.38pm British Summer Time. At that point it will be below the horizon, so those who want to see it are advised to look towards the south east after sunset to watch it rise.

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, the Buck Moon in July will orbit closer to Earth than any other this year, meaning it will be the biggest and brightest we will see in 2022. It will be just 200km closer to our home planet than June's Strawberry Moon, at 222,089 miles away.

The Old Farmer's Almanac said its names for full moons came from a variety of places and July's is called the Buck Moon because that's when the antlers of male deer - bucks - are in full growth. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers every year and they get bigger as they go.

There are some alternative names for July's moon, including Feather Mounting Moon and Salmon Moon.
