Julie Walters vows to make acting return for Mamma Mia 3 after bowel cancer battle

Julie Walters has said she would return to work for Mamma Mia 3 despite taking a step back from acting in recent years.

The 70-year-old actress, whose career spans over five decades, admitted she would make some exceptions and return to filming for the Abba-inspired musical comedy.

It comes after the actress received the all clear after bravely battling bowel cancer following her diagnosis in 2018.

Speaking to The Times, Julie suggested that there was a link between her cancer and the stress of acting.

As a result, Julie has decided to step away from work and focus her attention on her health and wellbeing.

However, she would assume the character of Rosie should Mamma Mia make a return.

“The oncologist said to me, ‘What do you think has caused the cancer?’ And the first thing that came to my mind was acting," she told the publication.

“Acting caused it, because of the way I approach it — I have to be totally in it. It’s very stressful. You’re being judged. It’s a stressful job and I don’t sleep when I’m working. It’s not good for me.”

“I don’t want to work again,” she added. “Unless it’s another Mamma Mia.”

Julie joined a stellar lineup when she was cast as Rosie in the original Mamma Mia movie in 2008 alongside Meryl Streep and Piers Brosnan.

The iconic actress then reprised her role for the sequel over a decade later.

In 2018, doctors discovered two tumors in her large intestine and she had 30cm taken out of her colon.

After 18 months of gruelling chemotherapy, Julie was given the all clear.
