Julie Felix dead: Folk singer dies at 81 after short illness

Julie Felix has died at the age of 81 after a short illness, her agent has confirmed.

The American-born folk singer passed away in her sleep on Sunday night.

Her agent said in a statement: "It is with great sadness that we announce that folk legend, Julie Felix, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday evening 22nd March after a short illness.

"We offer our condolences to Julie's family, friends and legions of fans at this time.

"She was a legend who will never be forgotten."

Julie was dubbed Britain's First Lady of Folk and found fame in the 60s.

American-born, her career really took off when she got a recording contract with Decca Records in the UK in 1964.

In 1966, she became the resident singer on BBC's The Frost Report, presented by David Frost.

She hosted her own shows for the BBC from 1968 to 1970 and guests included The Kinks, Fleetwood Mac, Leonard Cohen and Jimmy Page.

In the 80s she took a break from music before returning in 1993 with Branches in the Mist.

Julie was invited to meet the Queen in Buckingham Palace in 2013.

Her most recent album Rock Me Goddess was released in 2018.

Julie appeared on stage on her 80th birthday that year.

She also made an appearance on the acoustic stage at Glastonbury 2019.

The last post on Julie's personal website said she would have to cancel or postpone gigs due to the coronavirus outbreak.
