Julian Sands remains found in California mountains as Leeds actor's body confirmed

Remains found in the area where actor Julian Sands disappeared have tragically been confirmed to be his.

The actor, who was born in Otley, went missing on January 13. He had been hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains in California, while the area was undergoing challenging conditions.

In the five months since he disappeared, there have been extensive searches of the air and ground near the area he was last reported to be in, the Mirror reports. Identification hadn't been confirmed until today.

Bernardino County Sheriff's Department gave a statement on Tuesday (June 27) confirming the tragic news he remains had been identified as Julian Sands'.

The statement read: "The identification process for the body located on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been completed and was positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood. The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results.

"We would like to extend our gratitude to all the volunteers that worked tirelessly to locate Mr. Sands."

Julian married his wife Evgenia Citkowitz in 1990. He is survived by heir two daughters Natalya and Imogen, and his son Henry from a previous marriage.

The family are thought to have moved o the US in around 2020 and settled in Los Angeles. Julian was known for starring in A Room with a View, Warlock and Leaving Las Vegas.

He was an experienced mountaineer, who was reported missing while on a hike in the Mount Baldy simply after his 65th birthday. Reports said his car was found after he disappeared and police tried to find him through phone data.

Some searches were prevented because of avalanche risk. Jualin's three children were said to have joined the search effort earlier this year.

In a statement earlier this month, Julian's family said: "We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer."
