Julian Nagelsmann's comments on Timo Werner could concern Chelsea fans

RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann admitted that he may not have selected Timo Werner for their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid had he still been at the club.

The German has made the switch to Stamford Bridge as Chelsea look to bolster their attacking options.

Werner cost the Blues £54m after he registered his best goalscoring season to date for the Bundesliga outfit.

But Nagelsmann's reasons for potentially leaving Werner out of the starting XI may be a cause for concern for those in west London.

The 24-year-old bagged 34 times in all competitions with his pace among his best assets.

But with Atletico known for their dogged and deep-lying defence Nagelsmann revealed that Werner may have struggled.

He told BT Sport: "The opponents are not perhaps the best for Timo Werner because there's not a lot of space behind the defensive line.

"Today we decided to play with three offensive midfielders to create the spaces between the lines, and all the three midfielders did very well."

A lack of space in behind may be something that Werner will have to regularly deal with next season.

Chelsea have looked to dominate the ball where possible under Frank Lampard which has often left opposition defences camped in their own half.

That would mean Werner adapting his game as he aims to breach the Premier League defences.

Lampard though has had discussions with the German as he irons out what he expects of his summer signing.

"He was the main point; we talked a lot about things like system, like how he wants to play and sees me playing, and how the system fits to me," said the Blues boss.

"He is a really nice guy who not only told me what he wants from me as a player because he wants to help me as a guy."
