Julian Nagelsmann admits Robert Lewandowski transfer interest amid Man City rumours

He may not have been able to drag Poland to the latter stages of Euro 2020 , but Robert Lewandowski is still coming off the back of a record-breaking season.

Given that Poland went out at the group stage after defeats to Slovakia and Sweden and a draw against Spain, his three-goal haul at the tournament wasn’t too shabby. His main successes came with Bayern Munich , however, where he had one of his most impressive campaigns to date.

While Bayern couldn’t defend their Champions League title, they still won the Bundesliga, the DFL-Supercup, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup. Lewandowski scored 48 goals from 40 appearances in all competitions at a ratio of 1.2 goals a game.

Despite missing almost a month of the campaign with a knee injury, he also broke Gerd Muller’s 49-year-old goalscoring record in the Bundesliga after netting 41 times in the league. His 41st goal came in the last minute of the final game of the campaign against Augsburg, leading to wild celebrations among his teammates and a standing ovation from Bayern’s backroom staff.

It’s little wonder, then, that Lewandowski continues to be in high demand this summer. Back in May, it was reported that Chelsea and Manchester City were among the clubs considering a move .

In an interview with Canal+ that same month, he admitted that he was “open-minded” about his future. “I feel very good at Bayern, the city is superb, it’s a great club,” he said.

“I am always curious to learn a new language, a new culture. But whether that will be in football or after my career, even I don’t know.”

Lewandowski has entered the last two years of his current contract, adding to the general air of uncertainty. It’s been suggested that, with Tottenham holding firm on Harry Kane, City could look to renew their interest in him , while Real Madrid have long been linked.

The Bayern hierarchy have previously made it clear that they would be extremely reluctant to lose him, however. New Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann clearly feels the same way.

In an interview with Sky Germany , Nagelsmann has admitted that there is interest in Lewandowski but has played down rumours about his future.

“The rumours about Robert Lewandowski have been around for ages, I think since he joined Bayern Munich,” he said.

“I think it’s normal for someone who scores so many goals that almost every club puts out a feeler.

“I think on the one hand Robert knows what he has in Munich, what he has in this team. I’ve spoken to him and texted him.

“I’m not very fond of the first official act with a player being to immediately discuss his contractual situation.”
