BBC World Service presenter Julian Keane has passed away a year after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Julian, 57, joined the national broadcaster as an apprentice in 1988 and worked for the corporation for 30 years.

Most recently, he presented Newsday following the programme's launch in 2012.

In a tribute to the presenter, a BBC statement said: "Many listeners will have been familiar with his voice on the World Service for more than a quarter of a century, initially on the BBC’s French Service, then on Europe Today, The World Today and The Newsroom."

The statement added: "As well as being a warm, calm and surefooted presence in the studio, Julian also presented the programme from a long list of countries, often finding himself in the middle of some of the biggest news stories we’ve covered."

BBC presenter Joe Lynam paid tribute to Julian, calling him a "huge influence".

Former Newsday co-presenter Shaimaa Khalil tweeted that she would miss Julian's smile.

"It’s very hard to know what say... I presented my first ever Newsday program with Julian," she said.

"He was so warm, calm and supportive. I’ll miss waving and pulling faces at him on my way to the studio. I’ll miss him smiling back."
