Julian Edelman says Boston is ‘the best sports city in the world’

Julian Edelman recently signed a contract extension that will likely finish his career with the New England Patriots.

The reigning Super Bowl MVP has spent all nine of his NFL seasons with the Patriots and was excited to return home after signing his extension. Home for Edelman is in Boston, where winning championships occurs on a regular basis. Boston has reeled in 39 championships since 1903 with their four professional teams — the Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins.

Edelman, along with others, was wearing Bruins gear on his way to the Patriots offseason training activities on Thursday. He was asked about his Bruins hat after OTAs, and spoke about the unique experience of being an athlete in Boston.

“I mean that’s how it is here,” Edelman said. “Opening Day, we’re at the Sox. Wearing the Bruins hats right now. Go to the Celts, support them. It’s a very close-knit city. It’s probably — I’ve never played anywhere else, but I would say it’s the best sports city in the world.”

Since Edelman joined the Patriots in 2009, the city of Boston has amassed six championships — three of which belonged to his team.

“It’s exciting, man,” Edelman said. “This city has just always got some crazy sports vibes going. I don’t know — right now it’s the Bruins’ turn. It’s exciting to see a young team, a new team go out there with some of the older guys that have been around and compete at the highest level. So I’m excited for them and I’ll be at the games.”

The Bruins will begin their series in the Stanley Cup Finals on Monday, and they’ll be supported from countless Boston athletes. While Edelman’s cheering on his fellow Boston teams, he’ll also be working in pursuit for Super Bowl win No. 7 with the Patriots.
