Julian Draxler to Leeds United: Whites approach World Cup winner, PSG keen to offload, German boss' stance

Leeds United are preparing for their first Premier League campaign in 16 years.

The Whites face a daunting trip to champions Liverpool on Saturday in their season opener.

Boss Marcelo Bielsa has already had a productive summer as he looks to build a squad capable of dealing with the step up following promotion last term.

He has already recruited the likes of Rodrigo and Robin Koch but is hungry for more.

A number of names continue to be linked with Elland Road - the latest of which is Julian Draxler. Below we take a look at all the transfer news and rumours around a potential deal for the German.

Tentative stages

Leeds United are attempting to land Draxler from defeated Champions League finalists Paris Saint-Germain, French outlet RMC Sport has reported.

RMC, via Get Football News France, report that the Whites have approached the 26-year-old attacking midfielder over a potential move to Elland Road.

It would represent a huge coup for United to land a player who was part of Germany's World Cup-winning squad back in 2014.

What's his contract situation?

He joined the French champions in 2017 from Wolfsburg for a fee understood to be in the region of €42 million.

He signed a four-year deal upon his arrival in France.

Now however, PSG sporting director Leonardo is keen to offload Draxler as the Ligue 1 champions are looking to raise £54million in player sales to balance the books and offset the financial repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic

Would Draxler be open to a move?

Draxler has reportedly so far rejected any interest from Leeds because he is keen on remaining in the French capital, where the Ligue 1 campaign has already begun.

The 53-cap German international has also turned down a number of approaches from the Bundesliga recently and has less than 12 months remaining on his deal.

Given that he only featured 18 times last season, mostly as a sub, he appears to have fallen out of favour under Thomas Tuchel.

What's been said?

Last weekend, Germany boss Joachim Low suggested that Draxler’s place in the Germany national team would come under threat should he choose to remain with PSG for the upcoming season.

"I have had a long conversation with him and we discussed ideas.

"For Julian, it is naturally important to go to the next level at this age. If he played regularly, that would probably help him to be more impactful.

"The question to ask is will PSG let him go or not.

"When he was called upon, he had very good moments and can always play at this level but it’s important for Julian to be on the pitch week after week."
