Julian Assange will not be extradited to US over Wikileaks due to 'suicide risk'

A court has ruled Julian Assange will not be extradited to the US to face espionage charges over the leaks of thousands of classified intelligence documents.

Assange is wanted for allegedly conspiring to hack government computers and violating an espionage law over the release of confidential cables by WikiLeaks in 2010-2011.

He is facing 18 charges - including plotting to hack computers and conspiring to obtain and disclose national defence information - the Mirror UK reports.

At the Old Bailey on Monday Judge Vanessa Baraitser said she had refused his extradition to the US because of fears that he could commit suicide.

The Wikileaks founder had been living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for almost seven years.

He fathered two sons with his previous lawyer Stella Morris while living in the embassy.

Ms Morris was at the hearing on Monday.

Last September he was moved to Belmarsh Prison on remand after serving a 50-week jail sentence for breaching his bail conditions while in the embassy.

More to come.
