Julian Assange’s cat: What happened to Embassy Cat following the WikiLeaks co-founder's arrest?

There were dramatic scenes at the Ecuadorian embassy in London on Thursday as Julian Assange was arrested for failing to surrender to court.

Assange first took refuge at embassy seven years ago and could now face extradition to the United States, as he is also charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusion to access classified material.

While debate swirls around the fate of Assange, others have turned their attention to his previous animal companion: Embassy Cat.

The cat (gender and name unconfirmed) has become famous in its own right - drawing thousands of Instagram and Twitter followers under the name Embassy Cat.

The cat first found its home with Assange back in May 2016 and since then, the WikiLeaks co-founder has shared photos and videos of the feline, crawling on tables, hiding in hats, sitting in a pile of shredded paper and even running on a treadmill.

Assange also used the cat’s Instagram account to promote his own political views.

Unfortunately for Embassy Cat’s fan base, it's currently a mystery where the cat has gone since Assange’s arrest.

An Italian Newspaper, La Repubblica, reports he gave up the cat in November in hopes it would find a better life elsewhere. A different Russian news outlet report that Assange’s associate took the cat in September.

Assange reportedly didn't take good care of the cat, with the embassy threatening to take the cat away from him if he didn’t improve its living environment.

Wherever it ends up, let's just hope the mog's new owner won't force it to wear so many terrible ties.
