Julian Alvarez outlines ambitious Sergio Aguero goal in first official words as Man City player

Julian Alvarez wants to create a legacy like Sergio Aguero did at Manchester City, with the Argentine striker looking to hit the ground running at his new club.

Alvarez is heading to Manchester to begin life as a City player after playing his final game for River Plate this week. He signed for City for £14m in January, but spent the first half of the Argentine season back on loan at River, scoring 17 goals in 24 appearances since February.

Now, he will join his new City teammates as pre-season training begins next week, before the squad fly out to the USA for their pre-season fixtures against Club America and Bayern Munich.

Speaking for the first time in an official capacity as a City player, Alvarez outlined his ambitions as he pointed to club greats Aguero and Zabaleta as the levels he hopes to reach.

"I am incredibly happy and I feel ready to play for City. This is, without doubt, one of the biggest teams in world football," he said.

"You only have to see what this team has won in the last decade to understand the quality of the setup. I feel confident I can flourish here. The style of play Pep [Guardiola] encourages is exciting and I can't wait to be a part of it.

"City has an amazing recent history of Argentinian players and I want to put my stamp on the club in the same way Sergio Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta and Carlos Tevez did.

"I am so thankful for everything River Plate did for me and I want to thank the fans, staff and players for their support. But now I am 100 per cent focussed on Manchester City. I want to give my best to this club, help my teammates and contribute to Manchester City's success."

Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain added that City have been mightily impressed with Alvarez's form in 2022 for club and country.

"I said when we announced the signing we were getting a player of significant potential and everything we have seen from him since then has only confirmed that," Begiristain said.

"He scores all kinds of goals and has real variety in his game, We feel with the manager and staff we have here, he can develop even further and become a really top player."
