It might not have reached UK cinemas just yet but acclaimed Swedish drama Force Majeure is already being primed for a Hollywood remake and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus is in talks to headline.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Louis-Dreyfus might be taking on a leading role in the film which originally premiered at Cannes last year. The film tells the story of a family on a ski trip who find themselves threatened by an avalanche. But rather than it turning into a frenzied disaster movie, it transforms into a darkly funny look at a relationship pushed to the limit.

It’s a film that’s already picked up a sizeable amount of awards, from the Un Certain Regard jury prize at last year’s Cannes to a number of Guldbagge awards, the Swedish Oscars.

Louis-Dreyfus is rumoured to be coming on board as a producer as well, while no other names have been linked to the project as yet. The rights to the film, directed by Ruben Östlund, were picked up by Fox Searchlight.

It would be a rare film outing for Louis-Dreyfus, whose limited big screen CV includes Woody Allen’s Deconstructing Harry, a voice role in A Bug’s Life and, most recently, the romantic comedy Enough Said. She continues to star in Armando Iannucci’s award-winning political comedy Veep.

Force Majeure gets a UK release on 10 April.
