Julia Louis-Dreyfus breaks down 'awkward' Stephen Colbert kiss on the Late Show

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has opened up on kissing Stephen Colbert

Julia Louis-Dreyfus felt "so awkward" kissing Stephen Colbert with their partners backstage.

The 65-year-old star made her final appearance on her friend's Late Show one week before it comes to an end, and she joked she wanted to join Colbert's lists of guests he's kissed over the years.

Earlier this week, the late night legend reveals he's smooched Sally Field, Helen Mirren, Allison Janney, Jeff Daniels and Andrew Garfield.

During Tuesday's (12.05.26) episode, Julia quipped: "No one's watching. It's just between us."

Reflecting on the skit the following day, she told The Hollywood Reporter: "Awkward. It was so awkward.

"As we started to do this bit, I thought, 'Oh no. Is this gonna work?' (Laughs) I get very cold feet.

"He goes to me, 'Your husband’s backstage,' and of course, Evie [Colbert] is backstage too. We were all just dying. It was AWKWARD."

Despite the awkwardness around the skit, the pair have become close friends over the years.

She said: "My friendship with him is just easy. You know when you meet people and think, 'I feel like I’ve known this person my whole life'? That’s how I feel about him.

"Our paths have crossed a lot. I was a little bit ahead of him at Northwestern [University], and I was a little bit ahead of him in Chicago [at Second City].

"But we know a lot of the same people and we just kind of align comedically and with a way of viewing the world. We have a shared set of values."

Julia admitted Colbert's wife is also "in that category".

She added: "Because then when I got to meet and really spend time with Evie, she’s like a long lost friend. I just have a gas with those guys. We had so much fun in Italy. It’s just easy. There’s no bulls***."

Colbert, who is penning a Lord of the Rings film, is looking ahead to a new phase of his life after CBS decided to cancel The Late Show.

Julia insisted her friend's "future is so bright", and she's excited to see him "move onto bigger and better things" as she even teased a potential collaboration.

She said: "I just like him. I just like working with him. I like being with him. I say that very off-handedly, but when you meet people you like in show business, it’s nice to keep them close."
