Julia Bradbury hits out at 'walking man’s crumpet' nickname and industry sexism

Former Countryfile presenter Julia Bradbury has hit back at being branded “the walking man’s crumpet”.

Fans gave the 49-year-old the nickname during her long career of presenting outdoors and nature-based programmes.

Ahead of the upcoming episode of The Greek Islands with Julia Bradbury, she said: “I’m perfectly capable of accepting and laughing at certain labels that I might be given.

"I think it was amusing, but also very wrong.”

Julia added that she is concerned at the representation of women around the world and particularly in the film industry.

She said: “If you look globally, women are still massively underrepresented. In the movies, one in three [Oscar-nominated] films are directed by women.

"If you look at women in power, again only a fraction of male representation.”

The mum of a boy and twin girls added: “I go out to work and they benefit from that… but, most importantly, I want to teach them about respect for human beings.”

Julia was speaking at the opening of hair salon Gustav Fouche in Notting Hill, West London.

The British star is presenting a new six-part series on ITV, The Greek Islands with Julia Bradbury which will see her travelling to popular hotspots.

These include Crete, Corfu and Santorini, as well as lesser known islands such as Symi, Thirassia and Skopelos.

Unsurprisingly, she's offering up heaps of travel inspiration (not to mention a serious dose of holiday envy).

Julia said: "The Greek Islands are held with great affection in the hearts of us Brits - every year, three million of us head there for our holidays, and it is easy to see why.

"I have a strong affinity with the islands, my mum is Greek, although she despairs that I still can’t speak the lingo.

"But I’ve only holidayed here, and never really explored beyond the tourist trail myself, until now.

"This is a voyage of discovery and I’m taking you with me."

* The Greek Islands with Julia Bradbury airs on ITV on Fridays at 8pm
