Julia Bleasdale: my morning run in South Africa

Julia Bleasdale’s long run, in the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, Western Cape, South Africa

I consider myself in a very fortunate position to travel and train as I endeavour to make the GB team for a second time, in the Rio Olympics.

Finding some exciting locations for a long run breaks up a reasonably prescriptive routine of running twice a day for six days a week. One magical long run a week can boost the mental state and allow the miles to flow by; it’s my reward for all the gym exertion, base-running work and sessions from the previous six days.

The idea of sharing these experiences is to show to others a different side to what might normally be thought of constituting an elite athlete’s training regime and hopefully imagery like this will inspire some adventures wherever people happen to be and seek them out.

To capture the footage, we tried a drone for the first time, as we knew that the dramatic landscape and vistas would put me, a single human being on the mountain, in true perspective. Once we have a nice day with no wind, the logistics are fairly simple. We know the route I intend to run and my other half zaps about on either a bicycle or in car to capture what he can on film from several locations. Hence a two-hour run can be encapsulated in an 80-second movie. Enjoy!
