Julen Lopetegui tells West Ham why Javier Hernandez had to join Sevilla

Sevilla head coach Julen Lopetegui has praised former Manchester United and West Ham striker Javier Hernandez.

The Mexican, who goes by the nickname of 'Chicharito', joined the La Liga club this summer after two seasons in east London.

He had previously played for Bayer Leverkusen before joining the Irons in 2017.

In 63 games for West Ham he managed to score 17 goals in all competitions only to find himself overshadowed by Marko Arnautovic and, since his signing this summer, Sebastien Haller.

Between 2010 and 2016, Hernandez played for Manchester United and even joined Real Madrid for a period on-loan in 2014.

"We needed another player," Lopetegui told COPE, as reported by Marca.

"Seasons are long. Between now and Christmas we play Thursday and Sunday without a break so we need strength in depth.

"[He] seemed like an interesting signing, he showed an interest and it was doable. We hope that he can adapt to us."

Manuel Pellegrini rarely selected Hernandez as his first-choice striker at West Ham, and has this season turned to build his attack around club-record signing Haller.

The Frenchman moved to the Irons from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer transfer window and has already scored three goals in three Premier League games.

He scored 15 and set up nine assists in 29 Bundesliga appearances last season.
