More than 500 judicial officers from 90 countries will convene in Thailand today for the 23rd International Congress of the International Union of Judicial Officers (UIHJ).
Organised in Asia for the first time, the congress will provide a platform for member countries to exchange best practices in judicial work and shape answers on how to guarantee secure and sustainable justice amid global challenges.
Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, president of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Tceb), said it collaborated with the Justice Ministry's Legal Execution Department to successfully attract the congress to Thailand for four days at the Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld.
Mr Chiruit said the International Congress of UIHJ is held every three years and is a platform for judicial officers and equivalent professions to convene and exchange ideas on key topics concerning the evolution of justice work, legal and economic relations, and the challenges presented by globalisation and digitalisation.
He expects the congress will attract more than 500 delegates from 90 countries and will generate over 42 million baht in revenue to the country's meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions (Mice) sectors.
Playing host to many new events, such as the UIHJ congress and other leading international conventions, reflects the competitive capabilities of Thailand's Mice industry and emphasises the position of the country as the destination for international conferences in the region, said Mr Chiruit.
He also said Thailand's Mice sector is worth more than 170 billion baht and is ranked 24th in the world's most popular destinations for international conventions and remains top in Asean.
Marc Schmitz, general rapporteur of Bangkok Congress 2018, said the decision to choose Bangkok as the venue for this event was due to the city's status as a regional transport hub as well as its growing reputation in the Mice sector.
The 23rd UIHJ congress will be held under the theme "Guaranteeing a Secure and Sustainable Justice: The Judicial Officer, an Essential Element of Good Governance".
