Dame Judi Dench has shared an emotional update about her health, revealing she has now completely lost her sight. The beloved actress, 90, spoke openly about the challenges she faces as her vision continues to decline, admitting that everyday life has become increasingly difficult.
The Oscar-winning star, best known for her role as M in the James Bond films and for winning Best Supporting Actress for Shakespeare in Love, first revealed she had age-related macular degeneration back in 2012. The condition causes a gradual loss of vision, and earlier this year, she admitted she can no longer leave home on her own because of it.
Speaking recently at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds, where she is a patron, Dame Judi told the audience how much her eyesight has deteriorated. “When I go to the theatre, I can’t see. Hopeless,” she said, drawing gasps from the crowd.
Despite the heartbreaking reality of her condition, she’s still managing to keep up with the latest entertainment news and updates from friends. She joked that although she can’t watch television, she’s been hearing all about Celebrity Traitors and her good friend Celia Imrie through word of mouth.

The star also revealed that reading scripts has become “impossible,” something that has deeply affected her work. Known for her sharp wit and dedication to her craft, she has always been committed to performing — but now, she relies on others to help her navigate both her personal life and career.
Speaking on Trinny Woodall’s Fearless podcast earlier this year, Dame Judi explained that she never goes out alone anymore. “Somebody will always be with me,” she said. “I have to (have someone) now because I can’t see.”
Her honesty struck a chord with fans around the world, many of whom have praised her resilience and humour despite the challenges she faces. Those close to her say she continues to show remarkable strength and grace, refusing to let her condition define her.
The GoldenEye actress, who appeared in nine Bond films, also admitted she was “no good at that at all” when attending events on her own even before her vision worsened, suggesting she’s always preferred having company.
Over her seven-decade career, Dame Judi has earned a reputation as one of Britain’s greatest performers, with countless awards and honours to her name. Even now, with her sight gone, her passion for storytelling remains clear. Friends and fans alike say she’s still as sharp and warm as ever, often stealing the spotlight with her quick humour.
While the loss of her vision marks a painful chapter in her life, her ability to keep moving forward — still laughing, still connecting — has left many inspired. For someone who has spent her life helping audiences see the world through her performances, Dame Judi’s courage in facing blindness has shown there’s more to her brilliance than what meets the eye.
