Judge tosses seven corruption charges in Sen. Robert Menendez case

PHILADELPHIA _ A federal judge on Wednesday tossed some of the corruption charges against U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez and his codefendant, days after prosecutors said they would retry the case.

U.S. District Court Judge William H. Walls granted acquittal on seven of the 18 charges. Menendez and Salomon Melgen, a Florida eye doctor, are still charged with 11 counts of conspiracy, bribery, and honest services fraud. Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, is also charged with making false statements on his financial disclosure forms.

Walls declared a mistrial in November after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
