Judge tells woman caught with sim card in her bra at Nottingham Prison to find new friends

A woman was urged to find new friends after having sim cards in her bra at Nottingham Prison.

Laura Woolston, 26, had arrived to visit her boyfriend on May 3 last year, the city's crown court heard.

She has already spent eight weeks in custody awaiting sentence. The two sim cards must be destroyed.

Judge Stuart Rafferty QC imposed a 12-month prison term, suspended for two years, on Woolston who admitted bringing unauthorised items into a jail. She will receive help in beating a drugs problem.

The judge told her: "You will have to stop running into another disastrous relationship." Woolston, who had no settled address, replied: "I won't."

The judge went on: "You really must understand you are getting a chance which no other judge will give you again. I don't want you to go out immediately and get back into the same sort of mess with the same people. I wish you luck."

James Baird, prosecuting, told the court that Woolston had made a booking to see her boyfriend in the prison. She was then searched.

"She had sim cards and said she regularly left them in her bra and forgot about them," said Mr Baird.

Nottingham Prison sent a statement which was read to the court. This said that the offence "undermines discipline in the prison, undermines the principle of rehabilitation and supports criminality in the prison and also externally."

Gareth Gimson, for Woolston, said that she had been warned that she could face immediate custody and that anything else would be "extremely generous."

He said that "this is the moment" for Woolston to benefit from working with probation officers.
