Judge orders Chelsea Manning's release from jail

A US federal judge has ordered that Chelsea Manning be immediately released from jail in Virginia.

The former US army analyst, who leaked hundreds of thousands of documents to WikiLeaks in 2010, had been held since May.

She was taken back into custody for contempt of court after refusing to testify to a grand jury probing the pro-transparency organisation.

A detention hearing for Manning was scheduled for Friday but has now been cancelled.

On Wednesday, Manning's representatives said she had attempted suicide.

Manning was found guilty in 2013 of charges including espionage for leaking secret military files to Wikileaks.

US President Barack Obama commuted the rest of her 35-year sentence in 2017.

The 32-year-old has refused to answer further questions about Wikileaks from investigators because she says she has already given her testimony during the 2013 trial.

US prosecutors have been investigating Wikileaks for several years. They are currently seeking the extradition of the enterprise's co-founder Julian Assange from the UK over his alleged role in the release of classified military and diplomatic material in 2010.

Assange faces a charge of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion in the US.
