Judge orders Aaron Schock to release 2,000-plus additional records

Aug. 27--Former Congressman Aaron Schock, the target of a federal investigation, must give a judge 2,944 records by Sept. 17 so she can review them to determine if they are covered by a 5-month-old government subpoena.

Schock, 34, a Peoria Republican, was subpoenaed March 31, the day he quit Congress.

He recently released 10,730 financial records to prosecutors, and in doing so, his attorneys offered to make the additional records available for the judge's review. The additional 2,944 records may have references to financial transactions, his lawyers said.

Schock, who entered Congress in 2009, has come under scrutiny for his use of campaign and taxpayer dollars. A grand jury began hearing testimony about him in April.

Campaign and congressional records are at issue as the investigation unfolds. A separate subpoena has been served on the clerk of the House of Representatives.

The order Thursday came from U.S. District Court Judge Sue Myerscough, who canceled a status conference planned for Friday in the case.

The judge also ordered Schock to produce documents that were listed on a "privilege log" and withheld from prosecutors. The log describes records withheld under a claim that they need not be handed over for reasons such as attorney-client privilege.

The legal tug-of-war over documents came to light in July after the government sought to have Schock found in contempt of court for not complying with his subpoena. That could mean fines and jail time, but no such finding has been made.
