Judge jails drug dealer he is unsure is still alive

A judge jailed a convicted criminal who he is unsure is still alive.

Omar Omar admitted drug offences on the day of a planned trial in April 2016.

But he failed to turn up for sentence and has vanished, Bristol Crown Court heard.

Omar, 36, of Weavers Mill Close in St George, pleaded guilty to possessing Class A drugs crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply in October 2014.

In Omar's absence Judge Mark Horton jailed him for six years and three months.

He told the court: "Mr Omar has been out of contact since he failed to attend sentence on May 6, 2016, and a warrant was issued.

"He has not been located.

"The defendant was aged 30 at the time and is 36 now, if he is still to be alive."

Mary Cowe, prosecuting via video link due to coronavirus lockdown, said police searched Omar's address, from which he was absent.

They found bags containing 11.4g of 38 per cent pure crack cocaine valued at £570, and 20.5g of 59 per cent pure heroin valued at £2,050.

Miss Cowe said: "The defendant went to a police station himself and explained why his fingerprints were on the bags and scales."

The court heard he had previous convictions for drug offences.

Mohammed Ayaz Qazi, defending via video link, conceded the case needed finality and it would not be unjust to impose sentence in Omar's absence.
