Judge hits out at 'inexcusable delays' in bringing drug dealer to court

A judge has hit out at 'inexcusable delays' in bringing a drug dealer to court.

Adil Mir, 26, was found with almost £3,000 of drugs including MDMA, cocaine and cannabis, and had seven mobile phones.

He had been caught on CCTV dealing from his car on Edge Lane in Stretford, near a tram stop.

Police armed with a warrant went to search Mir's flat in Old Trafford in March last year.

But he was only sentenced for drug dealing offences on Friday, almost 18 months later.

After being released under investigation following the search, Mir went onto commit further drugs offences.

In November last year, he was locked up for 40 months following a hearing at Manchester Crown Court.

But a number of issues meant the offences Mir committed in March weren't dealt with by the sentencing judge in November last year.

Prosecutors told the court it initially took time to conduct forensic examinations into the drugs seized.

But then from September last year to March there were 'issues' with files being sent from GMP to the Crown Prosecution Service, prosecutor Eleanor Gleeson said.

Mir was eventually charged and brought before the courts.

Judge Michael Leeming hit out at the 'inexcusable delay', which he said made the sentencing process more complex.

"It seems to me you could quite properly have been dealt with when you last appeared here in 2019," the judge said.

Mir was jailed for a further two years, of which he will serve half.

His sentencing hearing heard that Mir threw a bag onto the roof of his flat on Lucy Street as police arrived.

It was later found to contain snap bags of cocaine and MDMA, as well as vegetable matter.

His car, a silver Citroen C4, was also searched with snap bags being recovered.

In total he was found to have £2,940 worth of drugs.

A further £855 in cash was also seized.

CCTV footage showed three incidents where Mir had been dealing from his car in Stretford.

Defending, Keith Jones said Mir is seeking to better himself in jail, and said he has been entrusted by prison staff to carry out jobs.
