Last year, former Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon was ordered to trial for charges in relation to the Larry Nassar sexual assault scandal. This week, Eaton County Circuit Judge John Maurer tossed the case out.
Judge John Maurer criticized the detectives in this case and also a lower court judge, whom he believes abused discretion in finding evidence to keep the case going.
The charges focused on a 2018 interview, in which police investigators questioned Michigan State official’s knowledge of complaints about Nassar dating back to 2014.
Here is a full quote from the Eaton County Judge, per Ed White of the Associated Press:
“The testimony and documentary evidence show … that no one remembers communicating with Dr. Simon about Dr. Nassar in 2014. Not one person was able to testify that in 2014 they communicated with Dr. Simon or remembered having knowledge of someone else communicating with Dr. Simon about Dr. Nassar or the nature of the complaint against him.”
In January 2018, Larry Nassar was sentenced to prison after multiple days of victim’s testimonies. Hours later, Simon resigned from her position as Michigan State President.
