Jude Bellingham gives verdict on his disallowed goal vs Man City

Borussia Dortmund teenager Jude Bellingham questioned the referee's decision to deny him an equaliser against Manchester City.

The former Birmingham City midfielder thought he had levelled the scores in the Champions League quarter-final first leg, with City leading 1-0, but was penalised for a foul on Ederson.

Replays showed that Bellingham reached the ball before the City goalkeeper, who hurt himself in kicking the 17-year-old, prompting referee Ovidiu Hategan to award a free-kick before Bellingham could put the ball in the empty net.

As Ovidiu blew so promptly, the VAR couldn't intervene or review the decision, letting City off the hook and denying Dortmund a perfectly good goal.

“I definitely think I won the ball fairly," Bellingham told BT Sport. "It’s a bit frustrating at a time when they’ve got so many cameras and so many TVs watching the game that they don’t wait for me to put it in the net and then check it. It’s football and it’s life, we have to get on with it, really.

“All I got told was that I got booked and it’s going to be a free-kick for them. I think they should have checked it but apparently I had my studs up, caught the goalie and it was a foul."

On Dortmund's performance, the youngster added: “I think we frustrated them when they had the ball. At times, I think they found it quite hard to break us down and we used the ball quite well and quite efficiently.

"For our goal, it’s a brilliant bit of play to put Marco [Reus] in and it’s a great finish, obviously still disappointed to concede so late. But we’ll use that away goal in the second-leg and see what we can do.

“The same sort of plan in terms of without the ball, but with the ball, we’ve got to be a bit more efficient and take the game to them a little bit.”
