Judd Apatow says Mel Brooks has found Rob Reiner's death 'really tough'

Mel Brooks is finding Rob Reiner's death 'tough'

Judd Apatow says Rob Reiner's death has been "really tough" on Mel Brooks.

The 58-year-old star has co-directed a new HBO documentary Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man, which features an interview with late filmmaker Reiner, whose father Carl was best friends with Mel.

Speaking about Mel's reaction to Rob's murder, Judd told Extra: "It’s family, you know.

"It’s a really tough one because as Rob talks in the documentary, you know, he met Mel when he was five years old.”

Rob and his wife Michele Singer were found dead at their home last month, and their 32-year-old son Nick is facing two charges of first degree murder over their deaths.

The Reiner family reiterated their faith in the legal system, shortly after lawyer Alan Jackson withdrew from representing Nick, with public defender Kimberley Greene taking over ahead of his arraignment on February 23.

A spokesperson for the Reiner family said in a statement: "They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings."

Ricardo D. Garcia, the Los Angeles County Public Defender, said in a statement that his office "recognises what an unimaginable tragedy this is for the Reiner family and the Los Angeles community".

The statement continued: "Our hearts go out to the Reiner family as they navigate this difficult time. We ask for your patience and compassion as the case moves through the legal process, as these matters are complicated and require careful consideration."

Nick was arrested roughly six hours after his parents were found dead. Nick is facing two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.

Rob's dad Carl - who died of natural causes aged 98 in June 2020 - was renowned for his double act with Mel.

Last week, he said during a question and answer at the premiere of his new documentary: "With everything that’s happened, I’m actually comforted that Carl passed away when he did.

“I mean, he never could have survived this terrible, terrible thing.”
