'Judas' snake leads hunters to one of biggest pythons ever captured

Snake hunters have caught the largest python ever found in the swamps of Florida - thanks to one of her boyfriends.

The gigantic Burmese python was pregnant and carrying more than 73 eggs, was 17ft long and weighted 140lb (63.5kg).

The Big Cypress National Preserve say she was snared after her position was given away by her boyfriend, who has now been dubbed a Judas snake.

They managed to capture the animal by putting radio transmitters on the male pythons, who then make their way to breeding females.

Snake dies and several animals injured after fire at National Reptile Zoo in Gowran, Co Kilkenny

Environmentalists have been struggling to find ways to eradicate Burmese pythons from the 1.5million acre wilderness since the 1980s, when some were released into the wild as overgrown pets.

Others escaped from a breeding facility wrecked by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

But populations of raccoons, opossums and bobcats have fallen by 88 per cent and 99 per cent and rabbits and foxes have disappeared entirely - while the python population has exploded.

It is illegal to release non-indigenous pets into the wild and the FWC has an amnesty program that allows owners to surrender nay such pets without penalty.

The Everglades National Park and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have spent millions of dollars testing ways to remove pythons.

But although this research has helped, eliminating pythons completely using current technology is impossible, according to the National Park Service.
