Jubeir: Saudi Arabia Continues to Support Two-State Solution for Palestinians

Saudi State Minister for Foreign Affairs Adel al-Jubeir said on Sunday that the Kingdom will continue to support the two-state solution to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The political process calls for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Referring to the yet undisclosed US peace plan, Jubeir added that improving the Palestinians’ situation should be welcomed.

The minister was responding to questions from broadcaster France 24 about US proposals for economic development as part of the Middle East peace process.

“I think anything that improves the situation of the Palestinian people is something that should be welcomed. Now having said that the political process is extremely important,” he said in an interview.

“The Palestinians are the ones who have the ultimate decision in this, because it’s their issue and so whatever the Palestinians accept I believe everybody else will accept,” he stressed.

The US is organizing on Tuesday and Wednesday an international conference in Bahrain to discuss the economic proposals of its peace plan.

The Trump administration’s $50 billion Middle East economic plan calls for creation of a global investment fund to lift the Palestinian and neighboring Arab state economies, and construction of a $5 billion transportation corridor to connect the West Bank and Gaza.

The “peace to prosperity” plan, which is set to be presented by President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner at the Bahrain conference, includes 179 infrastructure and business projects.

The Palestinian Authority is boycotting and the White House did not invite the Israeli government.

Gulf Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, will take part along with officials from Egypt, Jordan and Morocco. Lebanon and Iraq will not attend.
