Juan Mata stance on Manchester United future as goalkeeper signs contract

Juan Mata's preference is to stay at Manchester United with his contract due to expire at midnight.

United have the option to keep Mata, 33, for an additional year and the club clarified on June 4 they were still in discussions to extend his deal.

Mata only played 18 times last season but spent a significant portion of it at home in Spain as his mother was seriously unwell. Marta Garcia sadly passed away in March.

United signed Mata from Chelsea for a then-club record £37.1million in January 2014 and he started in the 2016 FA Cup final victory, as well as the 2017 League Cup and Europa League final triumphs. Mata has scored 51 goals in 273 United games.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to bolster the United attack with the addition of Jadon Sancho and Edinson Cavani agreed to stay for a second season. Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Daniel James, and Amad are among United's younger forwards, with Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek and Jesse Lingard the playmaker options.

The United third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant, 38, is also out of contract at midnight but United are about re-sign former 'keeper Tom Heaton on a free. Grant has played twice for United since he arrived from Stoke City for £1.5m in 2018.

United have agreed a one-year contract with reserve goalkeeper Paul Woolston, who sustained a serious hip injury in April.

Woolston, 22, joined United from Newcastle in November 2018 and has primarily been with the Under-23s but has trained with the first-team.

The club released Sergio Romero, Joel Pereira, Jacob Carney, Mark Helm, Iestyn Hughes, Arnau Puigmal, Max Taylor, and Aliou Traore.
