Juan Alegria Rangers transfer edges closer after red tape scuppered January Ibrox switch

Juan Alegria is set to sign for Rangers after almost making the move last January.

Steven Gerrard has been tracking the Colombian striker for a while and now the Daily Record reports he is set to land the 19-year-old before the end of this transfer window.

Negotiations are thought to be at an advanced stage as the Gers look to land the forward from Finish outfit FC Honka.

The UK’s controversial exit from the EU made a move six months ago complicated but Rangers are confident of a smoother process this time around.

Honka’s exit from the Europa League against Domzale means they are willing to let the South American go.

The Gers begin their own European campaign this evening when they take on Malmo in their Champions League third qualifying round first leg.

The winners will face either Olympiakos or Ludogrets in the play-off round for a chance to reach the money-spinning group stages.

Alegria isn’t being signed as first-team player straight away. Charlie McCann’s capture from Manchester United was confirmed last week and the plan to develop him until he’s ready for top team action is the approach they also plan to take with the South American.

The hope is he can eventually have a similar impact to compatriot Alfredo Morelos, who also made the move to Govan from Colombia via Finland.
