JSOnline: Joey Hauser now expected to commit to Michigan State

Well, this is certainly unexpected.

After numerous reports that both Sam and Joey Hauser were expected to transfer to Wisconsin, that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore. According to a source of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Sam is expected to head to Virginia while Joey is expected to pick Michigan State.

Joey is the younger of the two brothers and will have two years of eligibility left after he sits out his transfer year. He could apply for a third year of eligibility due to time missed recovering from an ankle injury. Joey, a 6’9 stretch four, was named to the All-Big East freshmen team after averaging 9 points and 5 rebounds while shooting 42.5% from three.

Stadium’s college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman later tweeted that the brothers told him they have not made a decision yet.

The brothers had initially intended on transferring together, with Wisconsin, Virginia and Michigan State being the schools in the running. Wisconsin was the only team of the three able to offer both of the brothers scholarships for next season and seemed the preferred destination.

For now it looks like the plan has changed. This would be a huge recruiting win for Michigan State. We will see how the story progresses as it has been a winding recruitment so far. It feels like one where it won’t be a certainty until the letters of intent are signed.
